I enjoyed the phone when I first got it. But now it has been 8 mos. and I have found: 1) it gets hot, 2) it drops call, 3) others' reception of my calls is poor; and now to cap it off 4) I've received the "downloading mode" message. I just now put the phone in the freezer with hopes of recapturing my phone book -- but I'm not sure that will be possible. I think State Attorneys General should know about this!!! This really may be consumer fraud.

I have had 2 of these phones break at the small "catch" on the back for the belt clip. I was very gentle with the 2nd phone and it still broke. I bought a pouch type holder but the battery gets hot and dies after 3 hours. Pretty much worthless.
Ward at Verizon was courteous enough to offer me this deal...
"I would like to offer you the opportunity to purchase new equipment at full retail pricing."
How BOGUS! If this is their idea of customer service - it is truly a joke.

Temporary Fix to the Samsung phone freezing up

The temporary solution to the phone freezing up in 'Downloading Mode', is the freezer trick described previously. I don't know WHY it works, (and I'm an engineer), but I was crazy enough to try it and man, I was amazed. I had enough time to get my phonebook out of the phone (manually of course) before it went back to hanging in the dreaded 'Downloading Mode' - DO NOT GET THIS PHONE. I'm switching to LG.

This can be a good phone if it WORKS. it doesnt have good ring tones..vibrate is ok..its not bad. a nice little phone if it works. but every once and awhile my screen would freeze. its been 19 months and just now i get the "downloading mode". it does get pretty hot sometimes, but o well deal with it or try another phone. i got good service but that depends on location and such. it lasted for a good time while talking. after a year or so..this phone will start heading DOWN. wouldnt recommend getting this.

I've had the phone for several years. I'm often cut off because of a lost signal, but I don't know if that's Samsung or Verizon's fault. Last night when I plugged in the charger, the phone suddenly went into "Downloading Mode". None of the buttons worked and I couldn't turn it off. Today I went surfing on the web, and found this site, but no quick solution, so I kept looking. Another site said to hold the "9" button down while turning the phone on. I took the battery out and back in (to make it turn off) and tried that, but it didn't work for me. Yet another site said to hit the "clear" button twice. So I did the battery trick again and hit "clear" twice, held the "9" button down and hit the button to turn it on and finally my phone worked properly. Hope this helps others with this problem.

I have had this phone for 9 months and just received the "Downloading Mode." Thanks to all of those who posted this probelm on this site. There's an 800 number on the back of the phone for Samsung direct. I called that number and told them about this problem. They said this message/freezing of the phone occurs because of the network updates at Verizon. She said to take it into Verizon and ask to have the phone "flashed." I asked if there is a fee associated with this and Samsung said no. I will take it in this weekend and let you know what happens.
I still give this phone a 1 star simply because this is the first problem I have had with it. This phone will freeze up on you in the middle of a call, while trying to make a call, turing it off/on, etc. The solution i came up with was taking out the battery and turning it back on. Advice: DON'T GET THIS PHONE!

This Samsung is absolutely the most unreliable phone and to waste another penny fixing it is a mistake. It died the other day or went into "Downloading Mode" and is what I would like to say in a vegatable state or a coma for you cannot charge this phone or do anything with it; it's useless. No buttons work and there is nothing you can do about it. Please when your shopping for a phone do not buy a Samsung. Try another manufacturer.

This June (2005) I will have had my Samsung SCHA310 for two years. I have never had a problem with it & use it all the time. Although I must admit it will get very warm after five minutes or so. The ringtones that came with are okay, but very hard to hear unless it's very close to me. Wish I could download more ringtones. I am so sorry so many of you have had problems with it.

I'm on my 3rd Samsung phone due to my contract and the hinge just broke again after 2 months of careful use. Ahhhhhh! I can't tolerate another smug Sprint person telling me that I must have dropped it and that they've never heard of this problem before. The company ought to be held accountable if they're not willing to fix the problem.
